For a taste of old-world winemaking, visit the Finger Lakes southeast of Rochester. Well-marked routes wind around Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Some 100 wineries are tucked into gentle hills that slope down to the lakes—providing the ideal climate for growing the grapes used in chardonnay, Riesling, pinot noir, cabernet franc, and French-American and native varietals. Finger Lakes wines are winning competitions at the international level. You can sample the latest vintages year-round. Wineries are busiest with visitors during the summer and fall, so if you’d like to linger over the latest vintages (perhaps with the winemakers themselves), stop by in the winter or spring. Food-and-wine pairings, holiday gatherings and other special events are held all year. Call or check winery and wine trail Web sites for details.
